BUDDY SYSTEM

Your first meal after surgery should be nice and light. Think: soup.

Stay hydrated!

If you are caring for a child after his or her surgery, this is especially important. Make them take sips every 30 minutes.

You can begin taking any prescribed pain meds as soon as the need arises.

Pay special attention to when you take painkillers and to how much you take. See our medication guide for more info.

Slowly drinking some room-temperature soda (or anything fizzy) can be a big help for nausea.

- For the Buddy -

If someone you're watching begins vomiting, make sure his/her head is turned to the side.

- For the Buddy -

The patient will be sleepy and/or groggy, and should be watched all day.

Keep the patient from biting his/her cheek, lip, or tongue before feeling returns.

Keep the patient away from stairs and other areas of potential harm.

The patient's mouth should be visibly uncovered at all times, even when he/she is sleeping.

When the patient is sitting, keep his or her head tilted slightly back.

- For the Patient -

Pick a buddy that you trust! They will be there to take care of you - you really won't be able to take care of yourself.

THINGS NOT TO DO

Don't drive a car.

Don't operate heavy machinery.

Don't engage in legal or financial matters.

THE CAR RIDE HOME

- For the Buddy -

Keep the patient's head from drooping down onto his or her chest.

Also keep his or her head from swaying side to side.

Children should recline with their heads back.

SMOKING & ALCOHOL

Do not drink any alcohol for at least 24 hours post-surgery.

Do not smoke for at least 24 hours post-surgery.
